Two teenagers have been charged with murder in a January shooting that killed one high school student and wounded two others in Chicago, police announced Wednesday.
The shooting took place Jan. 31 near Senn High School in Edgewater, a neighborhood on the north side of Chicago.
The two teenagers, a 14-year-old male and a 17-year-old male, were arrested Tuesday and police said they were questioning two persons of interest Wednesday morning before announcing the charges.
Police said both teens are charged with one felony count of first-degree murder and two felony counts of attempted first-degree murder. The 17-year-old will be charged as an adult, according to police.
The 14-year-old has also been charged with two additional felony counts of aggravated battery with the discharge of a firearm. Police did not reveal the identities of the teenagers.
What happened on Jan. 31?
Police say the shooting happened around 3:36 p.m. in the 1200 block of West Thorndale Ave., about two blocks from Senn High School.
Three boys were walking when a vehicle approached and several people got out and starting shooting, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said in a Wednesday news conference.
Daveon Gibson, 16, was struck in the chest and taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The two other boys, a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old, suffered various gunshot wounds to their jaw, chest, arm and leg.
The 16-year-old was taken to St. Francis in critical condition, while the 15-year-old was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized, police said.
The two teenagers charged were not students at Senn High School and police said they believed the victims had been targeted. Police also said there was an altercation leading up to the shooting.
Police used video evidence to track down car
Chicago police said they obtained video evidence to track the car used in the shooting, a stolen gray Honda with Florida registration.
Video obtained by police showed the two suspects parking and leaving the car, and additional information from the community led to the identification of the teens.
